- Identity Theft Prevention: When traveling, the risk of identity theft increases, whether from a stolen wallet or purse, or mail from a vacationer’s mailbox. With either of these, a thief could get access to enough personal information to buy a new car or take out a mortgage in the victim’s name. The following is advice from Frank Abagnale, a world-renowned expert on forgery, embezzlement, and secure documents, who now works with the FBI:
- Review all bills and receipts to make sure you really bought the product or service;
- Avoid suspicious ATMs – some are rigged to access your personal information while you are using them;
- Protect your mailbox. Consider a locked box. Have the post office hold your mail when you are gone;
- Don’t let sales people and waiters copy your account numbers when they are handling your card or check;
- Keep track of your billing cycles and call if bills seem late or missing; and
- Check your credit reports often – at least once a year – from the “big three” credit reporting agencies (Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian).
